CLASHES IN ROME

On december 14th 2010, Silvio Berlusconi survives confidence votes in both houses of parliament. The students have been protesting a planned overhaul of Italy's university system for weeks, and had timed Tuesday's protest in Rome to coincide with the confidence vote, Though peaceful at first, the demonstration turned violent after news of the confidence vote circulated among the students and antigovernment rabble rousers, this provokes the most violent protests seen in Rome for years,

   

GARBAGE

The Italian government has held emergency crisis talks after riots broke out in Boscoreale (NA) over plans to build a rubbish dump inside the Vesuvius National Park, an area protected by UNESCO. The proposed Cava Vitiello tip will be the biggest waste dump in Europe, with a three-million-tonne capacity. In response, angry residents rioted, torching garbage trucks and attacking police lines.

The parade of prurience in Italy is inescapable, an expression of the rot that’s now manifest at the very top of the Italian government, a reflection of the society’s deeper problem with the evolving role of women. While headlines tell an endless tale of teenage models, paid escorts, and Moroccan belly dancers cavorting with 74-year-old Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the media make it clear that men are men, and women are window dressing....

EARTHQUAKE IN ABRUZZO

The central Apennine region has experienced several significant earthquekes in recorded history. On April 6th 2009, the Abruzzo region was hit by an earthquake which destroyed parts of the historical centre of the city of l'Aquila.

After almost 2 years L'Aquila is still a ghost town.
