Thousands of anti-government protesters refused to leave the commercial heart of Thailand’s capital that they occupied after the bloody anti-government demonstrations held on Saturday, April 10th, 2010. During the clashes on April 10th, 21 people were killed and soldiers shot 16 ‘Red shirt’ protesters who were demanding the dissolution of the parliament and new elections. Speaking on national television, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva appealed demonstrators to leave the area where they had been camping in recent weeks, saying that the government and protest leaders were close to reaching a compromise. However, protesters stayed at the rally site, tore up police leaflets and showed no sign of leaving.
