A heavenly body is an object that doesn’t belong to the Earth and whose existence in the universe has been documented. But everything around us, including the Earth, came into being from the stars, in particular, from the death of stars.
Oh Be A Fine Girl, Kiss Me is a study on the life of stars and on how stars physically relate to human life. Drawing from Carl Sagan’s work and through the observation of 130 terrestrial substances, this project analyses the meaning of the well-known claim “We are made of star stuff”. Moreover, the author reflects on the illusory nature of photography, suggesting that humans don’t own the world, although they are inherently and materially part of it.
Thanks to astronomic photography, researchers at the Harvard College Observatory observed and classified the spectrum of an unprecedented number of stars and, in 1901, astronomer Annie Jump Cannon developed a classification based on star temperature, namely OBAFGKM, where O identifies the hottest blue stars and M the coldest red ones. The sentence “Oh Be A Fine Girl, Kiss Me” was created to help memorise the exact order of the different classes —turning, once again, something heavenly into something deeply earthly.
